This track is from my debut EP 'Cider', out July 31st.
'Plains of Venus' tells an imagined story of a woman falling so deeply in love, she can't admit to herself that the relationship is entirely wrong for her. When she finally realizes the reality of the situation, there is no escaping the rose coloured glasses she wears, that justify it all in the end.
For so many women, even the worst kinds of love is better than no love at all. I wanted to write a track that covered the emotional scale of such a story. It's inspired by some of my favourite female songwriters like Kate Bush, Mitski and Phoebe Bridgers. I hope it does justice to the world of a woman scorned.
lyrics
Sweetheart you're faithful to me still
I never leave without my fill
You wish on lashes, bat your eyes
You leave your handprints on my thighs
And it's red like the blush of my cheeks
It's red like the burns on your knees
It's red, and it makes me so weak
I believe that love could be like the
Plains of venus, burning up
Plains of venus, burning up
I'm sure there's passion in your touch
I just don't feel it very much
But oh, I'm sure that
It's red like the stains on my teeth
It's red like the marks you left on me
It's red like the sands beneath our feet
I'm sure this love should be like the
Plains of venus, burning up
Plains of venus, burning up
And you are everything you said you'd be
And yet you're so much less
Your snapping teeth, to me they seem
A summerkissed caress
And I'd rather be a woman scorned
Than a woman left loveless
So I'll forget the broken hinge
You'd never leave me on the fringe
Of something greater waiting for me
Somebody who might adore me
In a way that would never feel
Quite the same as the
Plains of venus, burning up
Plains of venus, burning up
Plains of venus, burning up
Plains of venus, burning up
Sweetheart, you're faithful to me still
